"Are you okay?"
It still startled him to hear her talking normally. Somehow, he'd gotten so used to her speaking in short, loud sentences that it was a shock to him every time she spoke quietly. At first it had amused her, but now she just rolled her eye at him and prodded him gently to answer.
"Fine. Just tired."
"You've been working too hard."
"Perhaps. Are you going to scold me?"
He looked up at her, almost smiling, and saw that almost-smile was still something of a shock to her as well, which just teased a full smile out of hiding. He reached out and she took his hand, tangling their fingers carefully and sighing softly.
"No. Not this time," she squeezed his hand gently, "but I think you should go to bed."
"Maybe."
But he didn't move.
