"Where's the King?"
Eowyn's voice was soft, and it hardly disturbed Arwen's thoughts, so she answered half dreamily, "Talking to the hobbits who are visiting."
"It seems as though Gondor is a busy place at the moment, then," Eowyn said, with a little humour in her voice, moving with a rustle of her skirts to stand beside Arwen. After a moment, she reached out, her hand covering Arwen's and squeezing gently. "I suppose your husband is busy."
"Yours, too," she replied, and smiled, more warm than she had been a minute before. "I'm sorry, I was thinking."
"I understand."
The two women drew closer together, on that high wall, but they didn't say anything more. They were born into this life, born to be second to a thousand other concerns -- their fathers the same as their husbands. The closeness that sometimes they craved, they really had to get from each other.
