_overthefantasy.
He fell. It wasn't a dramatic moment, he just sort of dropped and rolled down the stairs and for a moment Jane froze.
"Jane! Get to him!"
"Yes, cap'n!"
And just like that she could move again, moving after him and half rolling down the stairs herself, crouching at the bottom with Neil and wondering if they'd be safe.
"I'll cover you!"
"Thanks!" she shouted up, and then she focused on Neil, unclipping his helmet and pulling it off. His head lolled back and her heart squeezed with fear. "Live, stupid," she told him, desperately, and kissed him fiercely as his eyes opened a slit.
-----
Jane gripped Neil's hand tightly and stared down at his face. She would've cursed at him and ordered him to wake but she didn't want to display that little crack in her armour to Gray and Ryan. She just held onto his hand tightly for a moment and then stepped back.
The doctor leaned over him and gave him a shot of something. They stayed for ten minutes longer, and were about to leave when he finally opened his eyes.
"Don't say anything," she cautioned him, softly, and he just looked at her, confused.
"About what?"
"Nothing."
Amnesia, she reflected, was a very useful thing.
-----
"Jane?"
"Yes?"
"You know when I hit my head once?"
Jane looked up at him, balancing her gun across her knees carefully. "Yes?"
"I keep feeling like I missed something. I remember falling down, and then nothing... but it feels almost like there was something else. Ever had a feeling like that?"
"No."
"Oh, well."
He huffed softly, shifting the weight of his weapon in his lap. For a moment, the silence was comfortable, an easy thing, something they'd learned as a team.
"You didn't, like, confess your love for me or something?"
"Sure. I kissed you," she said, her tone sarcastic enough for him to disbelieve.
He laughed.
