"Why do you stick by him?"

Him, she knew immediately, meant Seifer. The question came, it seemed, out of nowhere, but Fujin didn't think for a moment that it was mere curiosity. Squall was working something out in that complex brain of his, and she was being asked to contribute. It was because of that that she didn't just trip out an answer about them being a posse or that he had been kind to her. She thought for a long minute about why she really stuck by him.

She thought of him, standing before them with his trench coat in tatters, commanding and almost royal and oh so aristocratic. He hadn't been himself, but the old Seifer was there, somewhere. She'd known that. That was why she had stuck by him then.

But why did she stick by him at all?

The answer, when she found it, was simple. "HAVE TO."

"Why?"

She raised herself up on one elbow to look at his face then. He lay at her side -- their bodies had been comfortably touching, not crowding, or pressing against, but simply resting together -- and his body was relaxed, his eyes closed. She had to wonder for a moment when he had come to trust her, anti social bastard that he was, and when she had come to feel such overwhelming love for him. She wanted to put her hand down and touch his face, his smooth cheek; trace a pattern of love over his face that overwrote the scar Seifer had left there, a scar that marked him, showed that he belonged to someone else.

The empty eye socket beneath her patch was that kind of mark, too.

"Same reason as you fight him," she said, softer now, because Squall was soft for once; relaxed, breathing slowly and quietly. She didn't want to disturb that. Somehow, even with all her awkwardness and bluntness, and his cold detachment, they wove together a spell of calm and quiet that even she couldn't disturb.

"And why is that?"

"It's the way it's meant to be."

Squall seemed to be thinking about that for a moment, and then he opened his eyes slowly, blinking at the light and sitting up, his arm snaking around her waist to hold her, warm and comforting, even if she didn't need warmth or comfort. "I think you're right."

Unvoiced was the sentiment that if Seifer called, both would go. It might be the break down of their relationship, but they would go, to fight and to support.

It should have been a horrible thought. Instead, it was a comforting one.
