FFVIII: Loosened Up

Summary: Quistis and Xu take a day off. For girlchild on ffsaffic, and also for ff_flashfic.


"You missed a spot."

"Hm?"

Xu rolled her eyes and squeezed more of the suntan lotion into her hand, moving closer to rub it over the spot on Quistis' shoulders that might or might not really need it. Quistis' skin was warm and smooth under her hands, and Quistis shifted a little, making a soft pleased noise.

"Thanks."

"You've certainly loosened up," Xu teased gently, adjusting the strap of her bathing suit and leaning back on her elbows. "This was supposed to be a study trip, remember? You insisted we pack a billion and one textbooks."

Quistis rolled her eyes and shifted a little, wriggling to find a comfortable position in the sand. "You honestly thought even I could study on the beach on a hot day? I just brought the books along in case in rained."

"That makes sense, you can study in the rain and get wet."

She huffed and flicked a bit of sand at Xu. "You know what I mean. We could sit inside a shop and read or something."

"That does sound like you."

"You're no better. C'mere."

Xu inched a little closer and Quistis pounced, pushing her down into the sand and moving on top of her, limbs tangling quickly. She was smiling more warmly than Xu had seen in a long time, maybe ever, so Xu just smiled and wrapped her arms around Quistis, feeling body heat and sunwarmth all along her body. "Oh? What's this, now, Quisty?"

Quistis kissed her. Once, softly, and then again, more eagerly. And pulled back with another warm, teasing-edged smile. "Why do you think I dragged you with me to an almost deserted beach in the middle of nowhere?"

"I'd kind of like to go for a swim, now."

Xu wriggled a little, got herself more comfortable with Quistis' weight on top of her and tangled all around her. She ran her fingers through Quistis' hair carefully, smiling a little and stealing a kiss. "It'll be cold."

"I bet it'll be fine."

"Dare you to skinny dip, then."

Quistis met Xu's eyes for a moment, then her eyes lit up just a little. It was the same look Xu had seen on some wannabe-SeeDs faces when faced with a challenge they thought they'd enjoy. Xu laughed and held her tighter.

"I'm joking."

"You dared me."

Quistis wriggled away from her and stood up, carelessly naked, one hand on her hip. It'd somehow got from the middle of the day to late afternoon to night without them really noticing or caring. That was the way of holidays, really, Xu thought, but she was much more interested in thinking that Quistis looked absolutely gorgeous in the faint light.

"I was joking."

"Still a dare." Quistis offered a hand and hauled Xu up, meeting her eyes with a tiny smile. "Are you going to join me?"

There was a giggle rising in Xu's throat. She swallowed it back. "You're insane."

"I'm a SeeD. And so are you. So are you coming?"

Xu went. Quistis went into the water like a fish, as if she spent half her life in there. Xu stood at the edge, feeling the cold water lapping against her feet, before Quistis rolled her eyes and splashed the salt water up at her.

"Come on!"

"If I catch my death of cold, it's all your fault."

"It's not that bad. Come on."

Xu reflected, as Quistis dragged her into the water, shivering all the way, that she had never expected Quistis to loosen up quite so much. It was quite the sight -- a naked Quistis with her hair down and wavy and wet. She'd never quite expected to be in the sea off an abandoned beach having a water fight with Quistis, either.

And she'd never have expected it to be so much fun if she had conceived of it.
