FFVIII: Respect
Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Squall
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: A brief chat in the training center. Timeline here.
"Mind if I join you?"
Squall turns quickly, startled, reaching up to run a hand through his hair and push it out of his face. He's a little confused by the question, by the person asking it, by the smile on his face. "You never used to ask."
Seifer shrugs, pulling out Hyperion. "True enough. But you weren't the Commander of the Garden then."
"Have you finally learned some respect?"
Squall is surprised at himself, at his smile. His tone is almost teasing, light and easy. He never thought it could be so, especially not with Seifer. He never thought he could stand in the same room as Seifer without being flooded with adrenaline and anger. And yet here he is, maybe even enjoying the thought of fighting at Seifer's side for a while, instead of against him.
"Perhaps," Seifer shrugs, and he smiles, too. He seems surprised by Squall's smile, too, but he doesn't comment like he once would. Squall doesn't miss that part of him, though maybe he does miss some of it -- the fighting, the challenge, the way Seifer could push him to his limits with such ease.
"I missed you."
There, he's said it and he can't call it back. A grat tumbles out of some bushes and he darts towards it, slicing quickly, making mincemeat of it in seconds before Seifer has even moved. He turns to face Seifer and raises an eyebrow at the look on his face.
"Is something wrong?"
"You missed me?"
Squall rolls his eyes, nods, gives Seifer a careful look. "Don't make me say it again."
"I missed you, too," Seifer says, softly, taking a few steps closer, "I hated every moment of the war, I was... lost. Under Ultimecia's control. I missed you, when I was self aware enough to -- "
"There's no need to talk about it."
Seifer grabbed Squall's wrist, wrapped an arm around him, clumsily, feeling Squall's body stiff and tense in his embrace. He rests their foreheads together and sighs softly, and Squall doesn't pull away. "Squall. Thank you."
