FFVIII: Instincts

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Rinoa
Warnings: Angst
Rating: PG
Summary: He's taught her how to fight. For [livejournal.com profile] fated_children.

"You can do it," he says, all blond hair and arrogance and bright shining faith in himself and in her and in the weapon he carries so easily. Hers still feels strange, alien, not the extension of her that Hyperion is to him. He tells her to be one with her weapon and she tries, but though she wanted (needed) to learn how to use it, it still feels like nothing more or less than a tool of death.

"I can," she says, quietly, and follows him anyway, out of Timber and into the monster infested wilderness she's only peeked out at before.

He moves so easily, slash, slash, twist and slash and down goes another monster before she's even dared to move. He grins at her, wiping blue monster blood and guts from his blade.

"It's not hard. Just listen to your instincts. I've taught you to fight."

"Not like you've been taught," she mutters, but he shakes his head and leads her off to find another opponent.

They fight like that all day, and she's sore and bruised and aching by mid afternoon, but not quite ready to give up because of the challenge in his eyes and his easy confidence in her abilities. She doesn't want to let him down, wants to impress him, wants him to look at her with more than the vague hint of a smile and the edges of amusement in his eyes. He thinks of her as nothing more than a spoilt princess type, not worth his time or his love.

He turns to her to say they should go back to Timber now, and in that one moment with his back exposed she sees the monster coming. And the adrenaline flits through her with the fear and the monster hits Seifer in the back, flinging him to the ground, and without even thinking she steps forward and fights, really fights, and she doesn't even look down to see his confused and surprised expression, she just fights.

He was right. Behind all the bluster and confidence Garden's training gave him, he was right.

She can fight, and she remembers it later, even though she's shaking all over, because she has to impress him. She has to. She says to herself that it's Squall's eye she's trying to catch, but it isn't and it never will be.

If only Seifer would love her.

I thought it was a 'last summer' story. Interesting little bitter pill anyway, though.
