"Feel like going out after the mission is done?"
Irvine's expression is neutral, mostly, but his eyes are inviting and he's toying with the end of his ponytail, maybe a little nervously. Squall is calm and blank, all leather and professionalism, and he barely even smiles to soften his reply.
"No."
"Didn't think so," Irvine sighs, with more than a little regret, but he doesn't push. He leans against the wall, gun in hand, and watches Squall and the way he shifts impatiently, all carefully controlled energy and adrenaline flooded system.
Irvine looks relaxed, but his heart is hammering. He's never really liked the whole killing people lark, but he's good at it, surer with his gun and more accurate with his aim than anyone has any right to be. In a training situation he never fails to hit his target. But when he's actually going to assassinate someone, sometimes he thinks of deliberately missing.
Pride refuses to let him say that he could accidentally miss.
Squall's presence calms him anyway. Even if he doesn't agree with the mission. Because he loves to watch Squall, loves to hear his voice, the occasional reassurance. And when Squall is around he can distract himself, flirting, teasing, asking him out on dates.
The whole thing is sort of an anticlimax, especially this time. Irvine's already been turned down and now the guy he's supposed to kill steps out of his house. He looks up, smiles at the sunshine, and in a moment Irvine has his gun trained on him.
There's only the smallest disturbance of the day and then everything falls into dead calm again.
Squall's lips curl in the faintest approval, and Irvine relaxes, carrying the gun in one hand again. They go home.
