FFX: The Game Isn't Lost

Fandom: Final Fantasy X
Pairing: None
Warnings: Angst
Rating: PG
Summary: Getting nervous means making mistakes.

Braska's feet falter. Around them the half remembered images walk, caught up in their own hesitance and their coming sacrifices. Jecht is at his side suddenly, hand on his back, propelling him gently. "Don't get nervous. Makes you make mistakes."

"Is that blitzball experience talking?" he asks, a smile curving up the corners of his mouth, and Jecht laughs. Even in that place he laughs, and Braska is half embarrassed, half glad of it. In the face of Jecht's easy, gruff laughter, the shadows and memories pale a little and he feels less like he's intruding on sacred ground.

Auron walks a little behind, eyes on the ground, and Braska sighs at his newfound hesitance even while Jecht drops back to give him a friendly clap on the shoulder. "And you, Auron, don't back out now. The game isn't lost yet. Maybe we can think of something else."

Jecht's hope is transparent and Braska and Auron know it, but they nod and walk faster.

"I wonder how many summoners came here, only to fail," Auron whispers, and gets a harder clap on the shoulder.

"Probably only the ones whose guardians started gettin' all antsy. Come on, Auron, you were in a big rush to get here before. Don't back out on that now."

Braska smiles. At least, he thinks, he's known happiness again. Since his wife's death he didn't really know what it was like to talk and laugh with people. There was Yuna, of course, little Yuna, but she's so like her mother that it hurts and happiness is bittersweet in her company.

But with Auron and Jecht, whether they're going to sacrifice or not, it's a kind of happiness that comes with true friends and Braska won't forget it. He hopes Yuna knows the same, no matter what she does.

Jecht's hope reminds me of Tidus and Rikku as they're climbing Mt. Gagazet, and I like Auron's grim resignation. Very nice.
