"Elle?"

"Yeah?"

Quistis looked over the beach. She looked over the people there, all the people who belonged there, brought back together on some whim of Edea's. Seifer, Squall, Zell, Selphie, Irvine, Quistis, Ellone... and Edea herself. "Why do you think we're all here? I mean, why did Edea want us here?"

"Maybe just for the sake of it," Ellone suggested, raising a thin eyebrow with that gentle smile that had once been so familiar to them all. Quistis remembered evenings when all of them had gone to sit on the end of Ellone's bed, asking for stories, asking for information, just wanting attention from the mild, sweet girl. She had drawn them all to her, even Seifer, and those evenings -- what Quistis could remember of them -- had been some of the happiest in her life.

"There must be a reason."

"Maybe she thought we all needed this."

Squall came across to them and Ellone went to him, slipping her arm through his and speaking to him softly about something or other. The two obviously delighted in each other's company -- even Squall was smiling. More than he had for even Rinoa. It was as if when Ellone left the Orphanage, he had lost something, something which had left him standing in the rain, promising to be strong. And with his 'Sis' there again, in the old familiar area, he had found that lost thing again, whatever it was.

"How did you know, Matron?" she demanded of Edea later.

The dark haired woman shrugged a little. "What do you mean?"

"How did you know that being here again would help us all?"

Edea looked around at the 'children'. Hardly children any more, she thought, with maybe a little pang, and then smiled at Quistis, remembering the exact same interested expression from when she was a child. She had always wanted to understand what to others was just instinct. "There are some things you just know," was all Edea would -- or could -- say. It never made sense to Quistis, but she found herself thinking that if little irrational things like that would make someone like Squall smile, they should be done more often.
