"You seem to like coming out here."
Yuna's voice is only soft, almost lost in the way the wind blows past them, but Paine hears. She turns a little, raising an eyebrow slightly. "I like to come here to be alone," she explains, and then curses herself, because now Yuna might leave and she didn't mean that.
Yuna bites her lip. "Do you want me to leave?"
"No."
She smiles and walks up to join Paine right at the edge. Paine glances at her, looks her over carefully. She seems lighter, somehow, like she gave something up. Like in flying up in the sky, higher and faster she left something behind. It seems to be a good change.
"Are you going to leave us?" she asks, in her softest tone, and Paine nearly doesn't hear.
"No," she says again, and though she might elaborate, for Yuna, she doesn't at first. Not without being asked. She thanks whatever you're supposed to thank these days now Yevon is nothing but a handful of remaining traditions that Yuna isn't like Rikku with all her questions and no subtlety.
"I thought you'd want to rejoin Nooj and Gippal and Baralai."
Paine doesn't know why she doesn't. It makes no sense. She dreamed of being with them again but standing with them, just for a little while, felt wrong. Maybe because they didn't need a recorder anymore. Maybe because they're all guys and now she's gotten used to being part of a girl team. Maybe it's just because Yuna and Rikku filled the hole Baralai and Gippal and Nooj left too well.
"I don't."
"Good," Yuna breathes softly. For a moment she's still and then she turns to Paine, looking up and smiling, and then she kisses her. Just a soft kiss. A soft perfect kiss.
And Paine suddenly realises why she wants to stay.
