fic_on_demand.
Dagger crept closer to Marcus as the gargant trundled along. She cast a glance at Steiner, but he wasn't looking at her, so she leaned closer to Marcus, touching his shoulder to make him look at her. "I'm not sure I like this place," she murmured, "I'm not sure it's safe, even if Doctor Tot..."
"I'm sure he wouldn't put you in danger," he said, raising an eyebrow slightly as he shook off his thoughts, his doubts and uncertainties, to look at her. He noted that her face was a little pale so he reached for her hand, giving it a little squeeze. Since when had she been anything but an annoyance to him?
She squeezed back, a slight grateful smile touching her face again. "Why am I tempted to kick Steiner off?"
"Because the clanging and shouting noises he'd make would make this ride a hell of a lot more interesting?" he asked, and couldn't resist a smirk at the thought of doing the honours himself. "I'll do it, if you like."
She laughed quietly and crept just a little closer. "Maybe later. He'd kill you if you did."
"Nah, he couldn't."
"Why not?" she asked, looking up at him, and he had to smile at the way her eyes danced with mischief. He could see what Zidane saw in her, after all.
"Well, you're his Princess, right? So you just give me a royal command and he can't argue with it," he shrugged, and now she was close enough for him to feel her bodyheat and he was still holding her hand. He gave her hand a little squeeze.
"Are you afraid the supersoft won't work?" she asked.
"Yeah," he admitted, his mind wandering back to Blank and that petrified forest, wondering if Blank was feeling lonely.
"Don't worry. I think it will," she said, warmly, and he smiled slightly.
"If you say it will, I'm sure it will."
