"My name is Rydia. You've met me before but I don't think we ever really got a chance to talk," Rydia smiled and offered her hand to Edge's grandfather and, giving her a quick look up and down, the old man shook it.
"Rydia, hm? Where do you come from?"
"I'm a summoner from Mist. Sometimes I live in the Land of Summoned Monsters, though; I've made friends with many of the summons and I'm the only human they really like living there."
"Land of Summoned Monsters, hm? Pretty outlandish place for a young lady..."
Edge shuffled a little uncomfortably and cleared his throat. "Gramps, Rydia travelled with me and Cecil and Rosa and Kain. She's not exactly -- "
"Rosa's a nice girl. Cecil made a good choice in marrying her. You should marry someone like her."
The colour in Edge's cheeks made Rydia smother a giggle. "Gramps! Give it up already! I'm going to take Rydia and... show her around the new buildings and... be a good host."
Gramps snorted. Edge coloured up even more and offered his arm to Rydia with an ironic roll of his eyes. She took it with a secret smile for him, nodding politely to Edge's grandfather as she was practically dragged off.

"Aren't you a disappointment to your family?"
"You mean to Gramps?"
Edge was holding her. His arms were a little too tight but then she was probably leaning against him a little too heavily, so that wasn't a problem, not really. "Yeah. Doesn't he want you to marry someone like Rosa? All sensible and grown up and mature and a white mage?"
He stiffened a little. "Rydia, why would I want Rosa? You know how I feel about you."
He was awkward again, awkward and blushing. At first, she'd found it funny to do that to him, making him feel awkward, make him feel as if he knew nothing about women. But it made her feel uncomfortable now, too, as if she was playing with him.
Which was silly, because he'd probably done that to plenty of girls.
"I just... don't want you to disappoint your family."
"My parents would approve of you." He pulled her closer, kissed her temple. "And Gramps will like you in the end. Promise."
And she surrendered, with the vague feeling that maybe she should put up more of a fight.
