Dorothy tries to be quiet when she sneaks out to join Relena, away from the party, away from the noise and dancing and champagne. There's a faint breeze, a cool one, from the sea, that picks up Relena's hair and throws it out behind her, picks up her dress and makes the skirt blow gently, like a Princess from a children's movie. She puts her hand on Relena's slim, bare shoulder, feeling the warmth of her skin, and not really surprised when she's not surprised.
"Your Prince abandon you?"
Relena blinks a little and then offers a tiny quirk of a smile. "Perhaps. He didn't want to dance."
"I see."
There's silence between them for a moment and then Relena turns back to admiring the view, leaning against the balcony's wall. It comes up to only just below waist height, and Dorothy thinks briefly that one brief push...
It's not that she doesn't like Relena.
She just doesn't like what Relena has made of herself, the shimmering-shining-princess, the politician who hides her capabilities behind a mask of overly-friendly innocence. It's not a bad act, she just doesn't like to see Relena lying and hiding so.
Relena's the light you shouldn't hide under a bushel.
"Trouble in paradise?" she asks, with a little edge to her voice, leaning against the wall beside Relena. Her bare arm touches Relena's and that's a distraction she fights off with a little difficulty. It's cold, and both girls are chilly, and that's the only reason she moves closer.
"Oh, it wasn't paradise anyway."
It's the closest Dorothy has heard to a straight answer from either of them as to whether Relena and Heero were together. She looks away from Relena, down at the ground. "You argued?"
"We didn't suit each other."
Dorothy moves a little closer, sees a tear on Relena's cheek that's at odds with the quiet strength in her voice. "Hey... it's okay."
Relena looks up and nods, lets Dorothy brush away the tear. "Yeah," she says softly, "it is."
And Dorothy wants to tell her that they'd suit each other.

Yeah. The whole fun is being all eeeeeeeeh whatsneeeext? and stuff. :3 I love getting reviews, but I write in fandoms like Engines of Light when I want to and nobody I know knows the fandom. It's about the eeeeh, I'm too old for Barbie dolls so I'm going to play with Gippal/Baralai/whoever.
