FFVIII: Tracks

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Squall/Rinoa
Warnings: Sap
Rating: PG
Summary: He really has changed. For the [livejournal.com profile] antiotpficathon.

Rinoa leans against the bridge, looking down at the train tracks. They gleam now, with use and care, and she can already feel the rumble of the next train coming, far away down the tracks, but on its way. It's a hot day in Timber, and she can smell the metal of the tracks, and oil, and all the train-things that are normal around the train tracks.

Squall watches her, one hip against the stone wall, his eyes focused on her rather than anything around her. He watches her lean over the edge cautiously, ready to dash forward and grab her, tense and ready for anything. He watches the wind catch her hair and drag it back, and watches her impatiently tidy it, smiling at the look on her face.

She seems to notice him there, finally, and she snatches herself back from leaning against the wall, smoothing her clothes and brushing off a smudge of dirt and moss. "Squall!"

He offers her a smile, just a small one, but it's a smile and it fills her with a dizzy joy to know she's the one who got him out of his shell.

"I thought I'd come and see you."

"I didn't think you had any time off," she teases, and he shrugs a little.

"Commander's duties are important, but time off is, too."

He's learned that from her, too, and it makes her smile, closing the gap between them to steal a kiss and feel him wrap his arms around her. She leans against him, breathing in the scent of him, metal and gunpowder and aftershave, and she smiles. She likes the way he holds her, still a little uncertain, but tight, as if he's afraid someone will steal her away.

She brought Seifer to this bridge, once, on a hot day in summer exactly like this one. He leaned against the wall and snorted at her delight in the trains, and he was arrogant and bright and sharp. She still doesn't know if she was too good for him, or he too good for her, and she still doesn't know if that was really love.

But this is love, feeling Squall's almost shy hug, having him hold onto her like that.

Rinoa looks up and smiles at him, reaches up to brush his bangs out of his face. "Love you," she says, softly.

His arms tighten even more. "Love you too," he replies, even softer, as if he's afraid to say it, but afraid or not, he says it, and that really shows how he's changed.
