FFX-2: Mistakes

Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2
Pairing: Gippal/Baralai
Warnings: Angst
Rating: G
Summary: He's been rationalising it to himself all along. Response to [livejournal.com profile] cupcakemonster's Honest Mistakes.

Gippal doesn't know whether to be cold to her or colder to him, and in the end he bows to the inevitable. Rikku can make mistakes. He's been rationalising it to himself all along, that Rikku has been lonely, that it was right, that somehow, anyhow, it was okay. But it wasn't okay and Gippal almost hates her for that, for being his precious best friend who is so perfect she can bring him through the dark and beat Sin with her friends, but so human she can make mistakes.

It was inevitable, that she could make mistakes, but he's never thought of it that way.

It tears apart perfect and love and forever, really, thinking about the mistakes people make, and instead of shouting and storming, it's Gippal's turn to run away. He thinks of how he could make the mistakes, and knows he never will. He thinks of how Baralai could make mistakes and that hurts more than anything.

Or maybe he's Baralai's mistake, and that hurts more.

He doesn't run to the Thunder Plains, though. He runs to Home, to the ruins, and sits among them and thinks about all the mistakes people have made. He wonders if he was one for his mother, who he barely remembers.

He thinks that he's been almost innocent, really. Thinking his little-boy problems were the only ones in the world. Then Rikku having a baby was the only problem -- the mistake she made wasn't the problem, he barely saw it. It was just that there was a kid inside her, growing, and that was a temporary problem that would go away and be right again.

He's not sure it is right, now. It's a mistake through and through.

No, not innocent. Naïve.

Stupid.
