cupcakemonster's The Wheel Still Turns (Only Matters If You're On The Rim).
She's in his lap and for a minute he's really not sure what to do, but then he wraps his arms around her and hugs her. "You okay?" he asks, and thinks that could be a stupid question, and squeezes her a little. "I'm sorry."
Her fists are clenched but at least she doesn't hit him and he smooths her hair a little and apologises again.
"What I did, it really wasn't fair," he finishes, and he grins again, easy-easy, though it's gotten harder with time and guilt. He strokes her back, like a kitten he has to soothe. "But I don't think I'm being fair to 'Lai right now, either. So maybe you should, you know, get off me."
He wants to tell her that he liked her how she was, and that he doesn't like her so much now, but he doesn't think she'd like that so he keeps quiet. And when she doesn't say anything, just clutches on to his shirt, he picks her up in his arms and carries her back to the bed, dumps her there all splayed out and kittenish.
"Get some rest, okay? I paid for the room. And, you know, we had a lot of fun, back when we were kids. When we were friends. It'd be nice if we could go back to that, y'know?"
And then he turns and he walks slowly out of the room, pretending he's not waiting for an answer.
