TLR: An Ancient Custom

Fandom: The Last Remnant
Main characters: David, Rush
Referenced characters: N/a
Pairings: David/Rush
Contains: Sap
Rating: G
Summary: David has a serious question for Rush.
Notes: Because I subscribe to the idea that Athlum at least has no problems with homosexuality (hello, the bartender), and that the bit post-credits means Rush will be back.

"Wait, what?"

"I want to declare you as my consort," David says, patiently. "You are a commoner, it's true, but nobody will have any objections. You saved Athlum -- you saved the world."

"Nobody?" Rush asks -- dazed, not sceptical, David notes with fondness.

"Some people still grieve for the loss of the Remnants," he says, because Rush will realise this sooner or later, despite his good nature; he's understating the case a little, of course, for many people are not just grieving but angry. "Most people recognise you had no choice." He takes a deep breath. "I thought I should ask you, before I do this, rather than presume -- "

"Whoa," Rush says, "wait. You think there's actually a chance of me saying no? No way, Dave -- I'm with you all the way, you know that, s'just -- I'm not exactly nobility material."

"You are more noble than I am," David says, with what he knows Rush finds embarrassing amounts of warmth. He drops to one knee, bowing his head, as he would to no other man, no other person in the whole of the world -- he sees Rush's hands twitch, reach toward him, wanting to grab his shoulders and pull him up again: he knows it, too. "It is an Athlumian custom," he says, softly, "to offer oneself on one knee to one's beloved, when asking them for the honour of joining with them in marriage."

"I know," Rush says, dazed again. "We do it on Eulam, too. But, well -- nobody ever -- it's really traditional, Dave. Are you planning on making me wear white, too?"

David bites the inside of his cheek to hold back a laugh. "Will you have me, Rush?"

"Yeah," Rush says, dropping to his knees too, so he can see David's eyes. "Yeah, Dave, I'll have you. But I'm not wearing white, okay?"

"You'll be in the azure and crimson of Athlum," David says, firmly.

Rush grins. "If turnabout is fair play, that means you've got to wear my flag on your ass."

Dave does laugh, this time. "We'll see," he promises.
