Summary: They keep it hidden, but not out of shame. For [livejournal.com profile] feywood, for getting up on time yesterday.

There is a kind of pleasure to being circumspect -- a kind of nostalgia, in a way, for their other worlds and lives they could have led, if they weren't, for their own separate reasons, brought together on this ship. They might not have known each other in those lives, but they'd have known this kind of love, the kind that does not announce itself the way it tends to be done here, with Zoe and Wash's open affection. Simon passes the teapot and his fingers brush Inara's, and a moment later their eyes flicker up and meet, with a warm shock. Inara takes a little pleasure in the way that Simon does not announce anything, in the private world they create in the midst of this life lived openly and publicly, in front of the other people living on Serenity.

It's not that she's ashamed, she thinks -- and nor is Simon, for if he was shamed it would be a whole other matter, he would be hopelessly open in it, his shame there naked for anyone to read. No, it isn't shame, but decorum, and also a little mischief, that keeps them hiding, that keeps their smiles and shared glances silent and secret. It's something they hold onto in this world where everything is plain, where truth is usually naked and often ugly.

It makes it a thrill, when she catches the edge to Simon's smile, when she contrives to brush her fingers over the back of his hand, when no one has any idea that Simon has spent the night in her bed -- when no one has any idea how she makes Simon come undone, almost every night.
