Instead of flowers, Jayne buys Kaylee a new toolkit. He knows she would like the flowers, too, but flowers don't last -- and they're probably more expensive. He admires the way she works, actually, how quick she is and how instinctive -- and she doesn't act high and mighty about it, not like some people do. Just does what she does, smilin' all the time -- that's the kind of girl anyone can like. So: a toolkit.
Instead of chocolates, he buys her fruit. The strawberries are more expensive, but she likes them best, savours them in a way no one else does. It's worth it.
Instead of pushing things, he waits. He's not sure what he's waiting for, but he'll know when. He's sure he'll know when.
Instead of kissing her, actually, it ends up that she kisses him. He's not bothered by this development. At all.
