GW: Blind Date
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Pairing: Duo/OC (James), Heero/OC (Ciaran)
Warnings: Duo POV, sap
Rating: PG
Summary: Duo was happily single until Ciaran and Heero decided to bother him.
Timeline here
I was perfectly happily single. Until Ciaran and Heero, through whatever joint thought processes of their own, decided that I needed somebody. I did have a crush on a few people at the time, but it was nothing more than that - a crush. Quatre being one of them, but being, unfortunately, straight.
And, yes, I know what you're thinking. Yes, I'm gay, and no, I don't and never have wanted Heero to myself. I wouldn't have forced Ciaran to ask him out on a date if I did. People seem to assume, and I know it bothers Heero, too, that Heero and I would get together because we're both Gundam Pilots and we have a common background.
Sorry, not really. I was a street rat, he had an almost parent like mentor. It does make a difference, I assure you. The only thing we had in common at first is we were stupid enough to get mixed up with the scientists and end up behind the controls of Gundams.
Anyway, so I didn't want Heero, and if I wanted any of them, it was Quatre. I was perfectly happy single and Quatre was straight. Which may surprise some people, but he was.
I went along with Ciaran and Heero's blind date idea, and found myself in a restaurant, dressed up but not too dressed up, waiting to meet the guy Ciaran suggested.
It wasn't love at first sight, as Ciaran afterwards insists. I liked the guy. He had short black hair that was much neater than Ciaran's red-brown spikes, and shrewd, very deep blue eyes. At first glance, he was nothing like Ciaran; all businessman like and capable.
Then he smiled at me, and his smile was cheerful, not quite a grin, but the kind of smile that almost forces you to smile back. "You are Duo Maxwell?"
"That's me! You're James?"
"That's right," he said, keeping the smile as he slid into the seat opposite me. "I wasn't sure quite what to expect, actually. I know that you're Ciaran's workmate and a friend of Heero's, but I didn't know what you'd be like. I think I've met you before?"
I laughed, shrugging a little, half embarassed, "I don't remember."
"Ah, you probably wouldn't, we weren't properly introduced."
James had the way of making it easy. He was relaxed, friendly, cheerful - and that brought out the best parts of me, as well, of course.
It was a good night. I hadn't expected Ciaran to pick someone so much to my taste, and Heero is more or less clueless in that field as well, but somehow, he did. As we left the restaurant, under the streetlamp, James leaned in and stole a quick kiss. "I'd like to see you again, it's been a fun night," he said, smiling, "Could I have your number?"
I laughed and we exchanged numbers and promised to meet up again the next week.
I had a feeling it was going to be a fun relationship. And James hasn't disappointed me so far.
