Neil's hopeless. Jane knows it too well, so she's always with him. It doesn't matter to her that it's supposed to be the other way round -- knight in shining armour and terrified damsel in distress -- and she wouldn't care if anyone did dare to make something of it.
Neil's brilliant when it comes to little fiddly bits and computers and any kind of technology. Hell, if the world was being taken over by an enemy made of bits and a computer chip, he'd be the first one she'd turn to. But it's not and sometimes he half seems to forget it, in all his cleverclever schemes. It's not that he isn't great in a battle situation, and it's not that she doesn't trust him with her life when it comes down to it. Just, sometimes, he lets his guard down, distracted and then --
And then she steps in and saves his butt, and she never mentions it and he never seems to notice, but she's there and he's safe and that's what matters.
