Summary: Baralai remembers a night when Gippal wanted to stay awake.
It was a quiet night. Paine was standing watch and Nooj was already asleep inside the tent. It was a training exercise, like so many others before it, and we had to fend for ourselves. We'd gathered wood earlier and now we lay enjoying our fire. It was too cosy to think of moving, even if it would, perhaps, be warmer inside the tent.
"I want to stay awake all night," you whispered to me, and I nodded, unquestioning. Your hands moved down my body, tugging at my clothes, turning me so that I faced you. Your eye was closed, the other, of course, whatever was left of it, hidden behind your patch. You held me close and whispered to me, words of love and desire and eternity. And I didn't say a word, but clutched you close.
We made love there, in the firelight. I don't think I can ever forget the colour of your skin in the firelight, the laughing light in your eyes. I'll never forget your arm, warm around my waist, when we lay there. I'll never forget the sound of your voice, whispering words I couldn't understand, but the tone, the tone so full of energy and love and bliss.
If I close my eyes, I can almost feel it all again now. I can't come to you. I've done too much... I have a lot to pay for. I should have resisted Shuyin, and I should have taught New Yevon better. But if you happen to remember that night, and if you think of me with longing, I hope you'll come to find me.
