Once, when John was a little drunk, Sam convinced him to tell a story about before he was born. A story about Dean, he'd said. About Dean and Mom. Dean had been out, somewhere, doing something. Sam had been nine, doing homework, back before he really started to be at odds with John all the time, and John hadn't been that drunk.
He'd told some story about when his mom was pregnant with him, but Sam mostly only remembers the part about Dean. About how the first time he'd moved inside his mom, the first time you could feel it, Dean had asked to be allowed to feel. He'd stayed there for an hour, grinning every time Sam so much as twitched. John hadn't been able to describe the look on his face, and Sam couldn't quite imagine it back then, either.
He has a feeling it looked quite a lot like the way Dean looks at him now, tenderness and want, protectiveness. A kind of joy, if you know how to read it. A kind of awe, as if he's getting something he doesn't deserve. When Dean looks at him like that, Sam feels -- destined. Like the world's been waiting for them to realise. For them to realise that some things don't matter and some things are more important than anything. For them to find each other.
If anyone asked, Sam would say he doesn't know when it started, but he does, really. It started that moment when Dean first felt him kick. He couldn't have known how much he'd love Sam, how much he'd give Sam, but Sam is sure he must have felt some kind of destiny.
