Summary: "If you're going to shoot me, just do it." For [livejournal.com profile] irish_ais.

"If you're going to shoot me, just do it."

Irvine shifted slightly, easing a cramp in his leg and moving just a bit closer to the window. Seifer didn't turn. He could've pulled the trigger right then -- killed Seifer where he stood -- and still have had time to leave before any undue fuss was made. But he hesitated. "How did you know I was here?"

"I'm a fucking SeeD."

"Not as far as I ever noticed."

A shrug. "Nearly a SeeD, then. Since we're doing chitchat, have you made SeeD yet?"

He shouldn't have been hesitating. There was no question of whether Seifer deserved it or not, and the tone in his voice made Irvine feel like forgoing the formalities and strangling him. There was the old arrogance in it, the old self-assurance that told Seifer he was better than anyone else, could get away with anything. But he still didn't pull the trigger.

"I was made a SeeD for my service during the Sorceress War."

"If you really want to be a good SeeD, you need to quit hesitating." Seifer turned, finally, and looked up. He found Irvine there at the window, met his eyes, like he'd known exactly where he was all along. He was smirking, but that wasn't surprising. "Do me a favour and shoot me in the front, okay? If it's in the back, it'd look like I was running away."

"You never did run," Irvine said, softly. He shifted again, sighted along Exeter's barrel.

"You're pretty good, Kinneas, you know," Seifer said, conversationally. He was smirking more than ever. "I didn't really know you were there. I thought I saw you earlier, and I thought now would be a good time for you to do this. So I was only guessing."

"You really would have made a good SeeD."

"Nah. I'm not enough of a bastard. Give my best to Rinoa, okay?"

"Are you ready?"

"I've been ready since I went with her," Seifer said. "Do it, Kinneas."

Even as he pulled the trigger, Irvine had to admit to himself -- in that moment, he almost liked Seifer. The asshole didn't even flinch.
