Miss Paula had always been close to the members of Grace. She had an easy intimacy with all of them: small smiles, little touches, things that let them know she saw them and appreciated their efforts. It had been even more so with Kate, for a while now: they were just beginning to get used to that, to the way Paula might touch Kate out of nowhere, draw her into a hug, allow her to get away with anything.
After the strangeness of the day the flowers bloomed, it seemed even more so. Kate seemed different -- lighter than she'd been in a long time, at least. She smiled. She smiled as if she'd been given a new lease of life. And she responded, responded to Miss Paula's advances -- there'd be casual touches on both sides, now. Nothing so overt as a kiss, but telling touches, significant glances.
It wasn't even so much of a surprise, the members of Grace concluded. The only surprising thing was that Kate and Paula were never caught doing more than that, never caught kissing or even so much as holding hands. It was the open secret of the school. It was hard to resent Kate now, too: she worked hard for Grace, threw herself into everything as if she'd suddenly recognised the worth of her life.
Only Paula, Rachel, Claire and Rose knew the truth of that.
