"Is something wrong?" Laguna touched Squall's shoulder, frowning slightly at the look on Squall's face - not exactly annoyed, perhaps, but then Squall's expression was never exactly anything.

"I can't find Griever," he said, simply, shortly, and Laguna was puzzled.

"Griever?"

"My necklace."

"Oh..." Laguna remembered why he had gone to find Squall, and sighed softly, not wanting him to go. "You should be going. If I find it, I'll keep it safe for the next time you visit."

"Whatever," Squall said, still not looking pleased, but perhaps a little pacified. There was a long awkward moment as they looked each other, father and son but lovers as well, unsure of what they were now. "We need to talk," he started, and Laguna shook his head slightly, indicating the airship waiting outside, not far away from the palace.

"When you're here again, we'll talk," he promised, and Squall was almost amused at Laguna turning down a perfect chance to babble.

"Alright then."

"Goodbye," Laguna said awkwardly, and Squall waved as he left the room, missing the weight of Griever around his neck and hoping that Laguna would find it. Hoping, too, that it wouldn't be too long before he could visit again.

He'd been meaning to ask for quite some time, every time they spoke on the phone, what they were supposed to be now. How Laguna felt about him. But as he stepped out of the airship, looking around, and saw Laguna, he understood.

Instead of the Galbadian army tags that he had never known Laguna to take off, the heavy Griever pendant hung around his neck. As Squall approached him he wordlessly held something out, and Squall put his hand out, palm up, to feel Laguna pour the warm metal chain he had worn the army tags on for so long into his hand.
