Summary: Baralai found Paine out on the docks. For [livejournal.com profile] calliopepurple on my first kisses meme.

"I thought I'd find you out here. The docks are just the kind of place you'd go to brood."

Paine turned slightly and smiled, just the tiniest bit. "Baralai."

"Lady Yuna was wondering where you'd gone," he said, quietly, moving to stand beside her. The breeze ruffled his hair and rippled the water. Paine lifted her head to enjoy the feel of it on her face better. "She's planning on leaving before the address."

"I suppose she's tired of the spotlight."

"And you never liked it in the first place."

Paine smiled again. "It's like you know me."

"Not as well as I'd like to," he said, sincerely. He moved a little closer, putting a hand lightly on her arm. "Paine, I'm sorry -- "

"There's no need to apologise. We all know what really happened." She shrugged slightly, dislodging his hand. "Don't go feeling guilty, Baralai. It doesn't suit you."

"Are you going to disappear for another two years?"

She glanced at him. His expression was mild, inquiring, but there was something behind it, a darkness in his eyes. Not that she'd blame him, considering all that had happened, if it were just that he were still unsettled. "I'd miss you guys if I did," she said, as lightly as she could. She didn't miss Baralai's little intake of breath, the slight brightening of his eyes. She shrugged slightly and looked away. "Why?"

"Because -- " he caught her arm, suddenly, and it was only because it was Baralai and she'd once known him as completely as she knew her sword that she didn't hit him for it. Her fists clenched anyway, on reflex, even as he kissed her, his lips pressing against hers for just a moment.

"Baralai," she said, when he pulled away.

"Don't disappear," he said, seriously, and she couldn't tell if he was disappointed. He smiled a tiny bit. "I want to do that again -- and earn it, next time."

"Baralai," she said again, wanting to say something -- tell him that he didn't have to earn the right to try such a thing, even if she didn't know how she felt about him -- but he shook his head.

"I should be going back inside. I'll tell Lady Yuna how to find you."

For a moment, she met his eyes, and then looked aside again, out at the water. "Alright." She heard his steps walking away, heard him hesitate when she took a breath to say more. "I'll see you again soon. I promise."

"Thank you," he said, quietly, and then she heard him hurry away from the docks.
