It should have gone wrong. It was them after all -- Maggey, reigning monarch of bad luck, and Gumshoe, who couldn't do something right to save his life. Something about it should have been less than perfect. Maybe he should've missed her mouth, or at the very least mashed their faces together a little the first time. But he didn't. He got it right.
"I think my luck is changing," Maggey said, brightly. Gumshoe winced. Everybody knew that when you said that, something inevitably went wrong. At least in books, and movies. He tensed, waiting for it. Maybe they'd get run over. Or there'd be a terrible earthquake and the building close by would fall down on them -- it certainly looked rickety. There was nothing.
"Probably," he said, cautiously. There was the sound of a gunshot, just as he said that, and then a scream.
"Sounds like you're going to have a busy day tomorrow," Maggey said. Gumshoe winced again.
