Kaylee's kiss was as soft as Inara had always imagined it. She shouldn't have imagined it, of course: it wasn't a good idea, and once upon a time it would've hurt Mal and Simon to know they were together, and still might. But she'd imagined it all the same, and now she had the reality -- softer, maybe, than she'd imagined; tender and careful, and easy. She hadn't meant to close her eyes, but they'd closed of their own accord anyway. Kaylee's hand was in her hair, tangling, and she made the softest, sweetest little noise in the back of throat.

"Kaylee," Inara said, softly, against her mouth. She meant to say it was a bad idea.

"Shush," Kaylee said, and Inara could feel her smile.
