She was asleep, still. It'd started to get light and there she was, all curled up in a ball, still asleep. He hadn't closed his eyes since sometime the day before yesterday.
He might have been obsessed. Drawn to what he shouldn't want. He didn't care.
He touched her bare arm. Her skin was warm, even in the cool evening, and he almost felt like he should yank his hand back, burnt. But he kept his hand there and shook her gently. She woke up quickly, grabbing his hand and throwing it away from herself. He was reminded again of a cat, not wanting to be stroked, who lashes out with one paw to drive the hand away.
"What're you...?"
He drew his hand back careful, offering her a placating smile. "Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you, ya? I just wanted to... I'm sorry. It's just cold, and I can't sleep..."
She sat up, tilting her head on one side. "Well, why didn't you say so? Come here."
It was amazing how natural it was for her to put her arms around him, how natural it felt to him to hold her. She didn't pull him to lay down, just sat there, arms around him.
"You are cold," she said, quietly.
"You're warm," he said, and moved a little closer.
