Summary: Mal watches River fight.
It scares him again every time he sees her do it. She fights well enough up to a point -- fights like a sane human being, that is, with a gun and her eyes on her target. There's the math running through her mind every second, of course, and her aim's a mite more perfect than's strictly normal, but she's still just like him, just like Zoe, just like Jayne. Only more fragile.
But there's a time when there's a line crossed and the illusion of fragility falls away. Maybe someone gets hurt, maybe the odds are too high, and it's like there's a switch flicked in her brain. Nothing can get through to her then. Heedless of the risks, heedless of what anyone says -- it's like she moves into another state of being, where everything but her is moving in slow motion. Then she moves with an alien grace, as if she's put together differently somehow from the rest of them. It's moving perfection and it scares him shitless.
It's beautiful, too, in its way. You can lose yourself in her grace, in the focused, beautiful look on her face. It's glorious and it's terrifying. Mal hasn't decided yet which.
