It is an odd sort of family, she thinks, looking round at them arrayed on the deck of the Galbana. Ashe and Balthier avoid each other's eyes with an uneasy tension, while Penelo is trying to feed everyone. Nono is nosing around, while Vaan is puffed up with pride at having Balthier aboard his airship. Basch seems to have donned tension and distance with his armour, and watches his queen always. The other children from the street -- Filo and Kytes -- move through the groups, laughing and chattering. And Larsa speaks earnestly with Penelo -- if he were a touch less dignified about it, Fran might have said it was flirting.
And yet -- it is a family, of sorts. Even all the aegyl. It surprises and amuses her to realise that it is Vaan that draws everyone together like this, more than simply circumstances. It's obvious, in the way that they speak to him, in the way that the aegyl Llyud looks at him, as if grateful for some gift. He has some kind of oblivious, obnoxious, clumsy charm.
Fran smiles, leaning back against the wall and letting the wind whip her hair. In a family like this, she can at least fit in.
