"Are you going to be home for Christmas Eve, then?"

There was a silence. Simon held the phone between his cheek and his shoulder as he rifled through a drawer, looking for something. Finally, he heard Will sigh. "You know I can never really say. I'll try and be back by Christmas Day, at least."

Simon carefully kept disappointment out of his voice. "I'll work Christmas Eve, then."

"Hopefully I'll get home before you that evening, then."

He found the pen he was looking for and grabbed his heap of Christmas cards. "You know, I'm the only doctor in the world whose boyfriend is busier than me."

"You know it's necessary."

Simon smiles, wryly. "I know. You can't ever promise me time off because you've got to keep a constant vigil. I know."

"I'm sorry."

"I remember enough about what happened when we were kids to know it's necessary," he said, softly. "I just miss you, Will. Especially now it's Christmas and everyone I see is playing happy families. Jane and Bran have stopped arguing and throwing things for the first time in a year, and Barney's busy going around in a daze because his wife's pregnant, and..."

"I'm sorry." Simon could hear the gentle smile in his voice. "Am I worth it?"

"You know you are."

"I do love you. It's just, all this, it's -- "

"Necessary. I know. I love you too." Simon sighed, reaching up to switch the phone to the other ear. "I need to write Christmas cards now. I found the ones you already signed -- I must be the only doctor in the world whose boyfriend's handwriting is worse than mine, too. I can't read a thing you've written. You'd better go, anyway. I'm sure there's something necessary to do."

"Simon -- "

"It's alright. Go on. See you on Christmas Eve."

"I don't deserve you, you know," Will said, sadly, and before Simon could answer: "See you then."

Simon put the phone down slowly. "Just keep your promise for once, okay?" he said, to no one in particular.
