"It was her idea," Phoenix muttered, pushing his hands into his pockets as Maya peeked into a shop window, 'ooh'ing and 'ahh'ing at whatever she saw there, hands pressed up against the glass and leaving marks. "Stop looking at me like that, Edgeworth. And anyway, you must've known she'd be like this. It takes two, you know. One to invite, one to accept the invitation."
"Refusing to come would have been rude," Edgeworth pointed out. "And someone needs to keep an eye on her."
"You say that like she'd run off and spend all my money on Christmas presents for herself," Phoenix said, and then paused. "Oh," he said, a second later. Edgeworth rolled his eyes at him, but there was something warmer there for a moment.
"Honestly, Wright," he said, trying to sound exasperated and not just fond of the pair of them. "If I wasn't babysitting you both..."
"I'm glad you came, even if you're being a meanie and not letting me buy everything I want," Maya said, brightly. She gave Phoenix a significant glance, turning away from the brightly lit window. "You're not around that much and when you are, Nick's dragging you off and locking the door behind you both."
Phoenix coughed, suddenly, his cheeks going red. Edgeworth just rolled his eyes. As Maya opened her mouth to say something else, he cut her off. "No, you can't have the gigantic teddy bear. It's a waste of money."
Maya pouted. "On second thoughts, I should just have brought Nick."
