Summary: Will goes to see Bran, Jane and baby Arthur. For [livejournal.com profile] lemon_advent.

"So. Will Stanton. Come to visit at last."

Bran hadn't seemed surprised, when he opened the door. Will wondered how that could be: he was surprised himself that he'd had the courage to come, more surprised still to find himself standing on their doorstep and ringing the bell. The tree outside their house was alight with fairy lights, and the hallway behind Bran was decorated with tinsel and paper angels.

"For the first time since your wedding," he said, nodding. For a moment, there was almost a tension between them, a line strung tight that hummed, now, like the visit was a touch, a pluck to the string. Bran's eyes were serious, thoughtful, but that was swept away by his smile.

"Well, then. Come on in. Jane will be glad to see you. You've come in time to see the tiny thing when he's still tiny, and her slimmed down a bit."

"Tiny thing?" Will asked, almost unwillingly. Bran looked over his shoulder as he led him inside.

"Shut the door behind you. Yeah, the tiny thing. The baby. Didn't you get my letters?"

"A baby," Will said, almost numbly. He found himself grinning. "A boy?"

"We called him Arthur," Bran said. "Here, through here."

Will followed Bran through, feeling as though his head were reeling. All the things he'd missed! And a baby -- a baby called Arthur. He wondered idly if they had any notion of how appropriate that was, but knew that they didn't, and if he even entertained the thought that they might, he'd be deceiving himself. But Jane's face was gratifyingly bright as she jumped up to hug him.

"Will! I never thought we'd see you. Especially not so close to Christmas. I thought you'd be with your family."

Will hugged her back, easily, trying to drop fully and cleanly back into his life as a human. "Oh, I'll be with them tomorrow. I hear there's been an addition to the family?"

"Arthur," Jane said, smiling. There was something peaceful about her, something warm and joyful in the glance she shared with Bran, and it made Will smile to see how she'd grown up. Motherhood hadn't transformed her, exactly, but it still left its marks on her. Will found that he liked it.

"Can I see him?"

"He's probably sleeping now," Jane said, doubtfully. Bran shrugged.

"He can be woken up for something as important as Will's visit, surely?"

"You say that when you're trying to get him to sleep again," Jane said, rolling her eyes, but she left the room to fetch the baby. Will was pleased by the look on Bran's face: it was pride, but not the hard and cold pride he'd clutched tight to him before. There was less of the arrogance, and more of a simple self-assurance, one that didn't make him forbidding. Will thought that the trip here had been worth it just to see his friends like this -- to see humanity, warm and bright, to remind himself of his roots.

"Always worrying, that one," Bran said, lightly, laughter in his tone. Will laughed, too.

Jane came in again after a moment, giving Bran an annoyed look as if she knew what he'd said. "Here, Will. Sit down, and then I'll show you how to hold him properly."

Will sat down, quickly. Carefully, Jane put the baby into his arms. As he held Arthur, the baby opened his eyes -- eyes that were large and solemn and curious, and Will felt a strange sense of destiny creeping over him as he held the baby close.

"Hello, Arthur," he said, softly. The baby grabbed at his shirt.

"It was a nice Christmas gift, getting to see you," Bran said, softly, later, when he was about to leave. "But we'd welcome you the rest of the time, you know."

"I know," Will said, smiling. He hugged Bran, quickly, laughing at his startled expression. "I'll be back. And I promise I won't leave it until next Christmas."
