"It's been a while, Edgeworth," Phoenix said. He shivered a little, hunching up in his coat. "Why couldn't you have come to see me in my office?"

"I was hoping to evade Maya and Pearl. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to see you, either."

"So you'd have stood me up?"

"It's not a date."

"Sure sounded like one to me." Phoenix shrugged, flexing his hands inside his gloves. "What did you want? It's nearly Christmas, you know. I had a lot to do, decorating the office. Well, cleaning it first."

"If Maya didn't insist on it, you probably wouldn't even bother cleaning your office," Edgeworth said, rolling his eyes. He didn't appear affected by the cold, exactly: he seemed to enjoy it. Phoenix gave him a bit of a resentful look -- for that, and for the suggestion that he was a slob, however true it might be.

"Still. What did you call me out for? Is there something I can do for you?"

"I don't need an attorney again, if that's what you're afraid of."

Phoenix shifted uncomfortably. "You know, I hadn't thought about that case, until you mentioned it."

"Liar."

"I mean it. That's not to say I wasn't thinking of you, but..."

Edgeworth raised an eyebrow. "You were thinking of me?"

He shrugged. "You're my friend, Edgeworth. Say, are you spending Christmas with anyone?"

"I was planning on going straight back, once I'd seen you."

"Did you really think I'd let you get away with that?" Phoenix rolled his eyes, reaching out and touching Edgeworth's arm -- a gesture of familiarity, maybe, of friendship, but Edgeworth could sense the tension, as keen as the cold. "I've been bullied into taking Maya and Pearl out for a special dinner, tonight. You can at least spend that time with us, right?"

"You only want me for my wallet," Edgeworth said, dryly.

"My funds are kind of low," Phoenix said, sheepishly, without appearing in the least actually ashamed at that. "But I'll still pay."

"How do you always do this?"

"Huh?"

"Draw me in again." Edgeworth made an impatient noise, turning away slightly. "I meant to see you to say goodbye properly. So you'd know that I'm not ever coming back here. I didn't intend to let you... tempt me into joining you for dinner. Every time I think my feelings about you are cold enough that I can see you again -- just to say never again, you..."

Phoenix touched his arm again: this time more familiarly, with warmth in the gesture. "Maybe it's a sign you should stop going away."

Edgeworth rolled his eyes. "You'd like that, wouldn't you?"

Phoenix met his eyes squarely. "Yes."
