The first time he failed her, he thought she would forgive him immediately. He thought that she would touch him, through Matron, and give him strength, as she had before. He thought she would love him, almost cradle him, adore him as he'd dreamed for years that someone would.
Instead, she was angry.
Her words, her tone, they tore. Until he felt as red and raw and bleeding on the inside as outside.
He bowed his head and begged forgiveness, promised anything, felt her contempt and hated it. Swore again to be her Knight Protector, bowed his head as he never had before.
