Summary: Would things ever be the same again?

"So. Allan's gone."

Djaq nodded. She didn't seem to want to say anything much: after a moment she twisted, bringing her knees up to her chest and at the same time letting herself lean against Will just a little. "At least he's not dead," she said, resting her cheek against Will's shoulder for a moment.

"At least he's not -- Djaq, he deserves to be dead!"

"You always see things in black and white, don't you?" she said, sadly. She reached up to run her fingers through his hair, ruffling it a little, and shifted again so that they could sit close, resting their foreheads together. "Allan is a good man. Had any of us really come to harm through him -- he would have died inside. To him, the king isn't really real, he's... a concept. Allan knew his betrayal would harm the king, but... that didn't really matter. He would not have sold information that would have harmed you or me -- or Robin, or Much, or John."

Will closed his eyes. "I can't see things like that the way you do, Djaq."

"That's why you've got me," she said, and slid her arms around him as he moved closer, hiding his face against her shoulder. Much, about to call them over to eat, opened his mouth and then closed it again several times before nodding and smiling and quickly going back into the camp.

"It's going to be quiet without him, isn't it?"

Djaq ran her fingers through Will's hair again. "Yes."

"Will things ever... be the same?"

Djaq closed her eyes, too, and held him tighter as he moved to put his arms around her. She thought of Allan, of his quick smile and his quick tongue, and of the times when he was gone to betray them and the camp was quiet: the times they had all known without knowing when silence had numbed them all. "Would you want it to be?"
