"What's wrong with you?"
Phoenix looked up, startled. He'd almost forgot -- somehow -- that Maya was there. She leaned over him, trying to look at his paperwork, trying to get a good look at his face. "Oh -- nothing, really," he said, sitting back and running his hand through his hair. He wished for a moment that he was a better liar.
"A likely story," she said, teasing a little. She found somewhere to perch, putting her hand on his shoulder. "What is it? Are you worried about not having cases? We're sure to get something big soon! I can feel it in my bones."
"Can you really?" he asked, curiously.
"No," she admitted. "But I do sort of feel something. We'll have a case soon, I promise."
"Hm," he said, and tried not to sound too doubtful. "It isn't that, though," he added, and wanted to kick himself.
"So what is is then? Now I have to get to the bottom of this mystery. Maybe you should give me a testimony, and I can practice where to press -- you know, you're not a good example, you press all the time anyway -- "
"I miss Mia," he blurted, and then wished he could take the words back. Maya's smile didn't fade.
"I don't."
"Y-you don't?"
"She's still here, remember?" Maya waved a hand as if to encompass all of the office. "She's watching over you. People don't just leave this world behind, you know. There are so many connections... I'm one, and you're one. Mia's right here. And she wants me to do this right now -- " and she broke off as she hugged him, fierce and tight.
"Really?"
"Well, I don't know specifically..."
Phoenix had to smile at Maya's slightly crestfallen expression. "I think I know what Mia would want you to do."
"Oh?" Maya asked, looking up, eyes suddenly shining.
"Get some water for Charley," he said, without smiling. Once again, as Maya dived for the tiny watering can, he had to wonder if she really ever understood when he was joking.
