Summary: The first time Marian held a sword. For the fanwork-a-thon.
"Bit big for you, that, lady," the guard said, smiling a little. Marian didn't spare him a glance. It was heavy, of course -- maidens, she thought, are not supposed to wield swords. Robin would have told her how to hold it, helped her lift it, steadied her. Robin would have -- but Robin was gone, and she shook her head fiercely to remind herself once more not to think of him. He was off fighting a war, and she was not waiting for him.
And she was too old to consider herself a maiden, even if she was unmarried. She knew that people thought she should be, knew that there were whispers. "If I were a man," she said, very softly, so that the guard couldn't hear, "Robin would have taken me with him."
But then, of course, she and Robin would not have been -- as they had been.
Still, she looked at the sword in her hand and she wanted... she wanted to be able to lift it, to know how to wield it, how to swing and parry and thrust. Perhaps Robin would come back soon. He might teach her. Though he was more likely to look at her with mocking laughter in his eyes, and if he did teach her he'd be mocking her unladylike ways the whole time.
She put the sword aside, cursing the tears that suddenly stung her eyes.
