"Mind you don't tire him out, Elanor," Rosie said, hands on her hips. She couldn't help a smile, though, and nor could Sam -- it was, as he said to Rosie later, a treat to see Frodo with a little one, and a pity he'd never felt the need to marry and have one of his own. Frodo looked ill again: it didn't escape Rosie and Sam that he was ill so often in March and October. But his thin face lit up when Elanor was in the room, so they thought Elanor's visit would do him good.

"She won't tire me out," Frodo said, with one of his nicest smiles, and scooped little Elanor up into his lap. "I hear it's someone's birthday tomorrow," he said, feigning ignorance. Sam watched fondly as Elanor chattered away and Frodo listened. He had been afraid of getting bored of this normal life, but the stubborn Gamgee part of him that had been concerned about saucepans even near the end still held strong in him, apparently.

Rosie looked at him, hands still on her hips. "What are you thinking, Samwise Gamgee?"

"I'm thinking about how happy I am, Rosie," he said, smiling at her.
