"For a mechanic," Simon says, and his voice is strained, "you get into a lot of messes that are normally reserved for people like the captain, don't you, Kaylee?"
He has good reason to be stressed, she thinks, being that he's busy stitching up a not insignificant gash in her arm. She has good reason to be stressed too, of course. There was a bar fight -- she wasn't involved in it, of course, but somehow ended up caught up in it -- and someone had attacked her. Mal had thrown a stool at them and then dragged her out and back to Serenity, of course, where Simon was waiting -- already alerted to the situation by River and looking about to have a fit.
"It's not my fault," she says, and then, "ouch!"
"Sorry," he says, biting his lip. He looks kind of sexy like that, she thinks, concentrating so hard, scowling a little...
"Ow," she says, all of a sudden, drawn out of her reverie by another needling of pain. He stops for a moment, smiling at her just a little bit -- a tense smile, not his full, sweet smile, but a smile nonetheless.
"Sorry," he says again. "Won't take a minute longer, and then I'll find some better painkillers."
"You could distract me from the pain," she says, slyly.
"Kaylee!"
He sounds vaguely scandalised, she thinks. But maybe, just maybe, a little intrigued, too. Interesting. Very interesting.
