John half-expects, still, to wake to Blodwen beside him. He remembers the way she looked -- she never looked entirely at peace, her face in sleep always somehow caught into grimness, into a watching-waiting coldness. He had hated seeing her like that, but now he would give anything -- anything -- to see her beside him again, to wake her into warmth and laughter as he had before.
On mornings like this, all he can do is rise, rise to meet the day, the chilly morning and the damp foggy wind. Owen is already outside, silent, waiting for him, knowing.
