She shouldn't have been surprised when he kissed her. There had been moments before when they'd almost... -- but that didn't matter, they hadn't, and now they had, and she found herself smiling at him, feeling something deep inside that she wasn't sure she'd ever understand, but she knew what it was, she knew what he would call it. He was grinning at her, and he didn't need her strong right arm or her quick quick mind, but he wanted them, wanted her, at his side, and that made an awful lot of sense.
