Summary: Balthier misses the sky. For [livejournal.com profile] the_sandsea.

"I smell the dawn coming," Fran says, very softly, touching his shoulder. Balthier comes out of his half-doze quickly and easily, rising to his feet and stretching, all just as quietly. He smiles at her and nods his thanks for waking her up, walking softly to the edge and looking down at all the sand below. Fran moves to his side, her bow still at the ready in case any of the local flora and fauna decides to get moving now the others, who are still sleeping, are seemingly unprotected.

"We still have a long way to go," he says, thoughtfully. "Perhaps it's best if we start soon, while it's still half-dark. I know that the Dalmascans will consider themselves immune to heat, but..."

"But still it is wiser to travel when it is cool and rest when it is hot," Fran finishes, nodding. "I will wake them."

She does not move. Balthier turns to her, raising an eyebrow.

"Something is troubling you," she says. "You slept fitfully last night."

"I just miss the sky," he says, and yet in that 'just' is contained an aching that makes Fran ache with him. She takes a step closer, so that their shoulders brush, so he knows she's listening. He's silent for a moment and then he goes on. "I have no obligation to these people, and yet... I want to see the end of this story. At the same time, I long to be out of here -- to have wings again."

Fran glances back at the others. Only Basch is stirring, and there is still no sound of any other creature out there. She turns her eyes back to Balthier, and still, she waits.

"I feel trapped," is all he says, shrugging helplessly. She puts her hand on his shoulder and smiles, trying to speak lightly.

"You cannot leave this company because you wish to see the end -- you wish to be instrumental in bringing things about. All Humes are so. Childishly, you want to leave your mark on the page of history. You do not want to be forgotten when you are gone."

"So I am both a child and a fool," he says, with a half-smile.

"Yes," she says, and she's already turning back to the others to go and wake Basch, now: "But I will stay at your side, no matter what you decide. Remember that."

She doesn't turn her head to see his reaction, but she smiles.
