Summary: Chiyo wanted to make Hatsumomo like her. For
10lilies.
It was late in the morning, and Hatsumomo had just woken. Chiyo knew that only because she'd been trying as hard as she could to find some reason to go and see Hatsumomo -- Pumpkin was adamant that it was not her place, that she didn't want to get in Hatsumomo's way -- especially not on a morning! -- but she still contrived to be in the hallway when Hatsumomo stepped out of her room, her hair a tumbled mess and her face unadorned. She quickly got down on her knees and tried to bow as gracefully as possibly.
"Hatsumomo, I -- "
"Don't speak until you're spoken to," Hatsumomo said, coolly. Chiyo tried to peer up at her, trying to catch a glimpse of her face. She looked amused, running her fingers through her hair and slowly crouching down to look at her. She felt as if she had to squirm -- she felt almost like a bug, and swallowed back her fear that Hatsumomo would crush her somehow. "What do you want to say, little Chiyo?"
"I... I found something of yours," she said, very quietly. She sat up a little, pulling one of Hatsumomo's combs out of the pocket she'd carefully stowed it in. "I wanted to -- "
Hatsumomo snatched it from her hands and slapped her face hard, all the same moment. "Thief!"
"I didn't -- "
Hatsumomo seized a handful of her hair, drawing her close. Chiyo whimpered softly, feeling Hatsumomo's breath against her face and her hard fingers digging cruelly into her shoulder as well as the hand in her hair. "You did. Don't touch my things again, little Chiyo. I might have to do something drastic..."
For a moment, they both held still, close enough to... to... Chiyo didn't know what. She didn't know what to expect. Then Hatsumomo pulled away with a derisive laugh, thrusting Chiyo from her.
"Thieves get beaten," she said, rising to her feet in a single smooth movement. "Stay out of my way, Chiyo, and I won't ever have to do anything to you."
Chiyo nodded, cautiously reaching up to touch her shoulder, sure it must have been bruised. She watched Hatsumomo walk away and then got up to go back her duties with Pumpkin, feeling unbalanced and very, very strange.
