MOAG: Jealousy

Fandom: Memoirs of a Geisha
Pairing: Hatsumomo/Korin
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Hatsumomo will keep Korin's secret, for a price. Based on canon only, I have no knowledge of the customs and such really. >>; For [livejournal.com profile] 10lilies.

"Get out of here, girl," Hatsumomo says to Chiyo as she steps into the okiya. Another geisha steps in behind her, closing the door quietly, her face almost luminous in its unnatural make up. Korin, Chiyo recognises, as she scurries away, pulling a screen door shut behind her and crouching behind it, trying not to breathe too loudly. She doesn't want the two geisha to catch her, of course -- she knows the disasters that can happen when she gets in the way, now, and she hates the way Hatsumomo grabs her and pulls her hair and gets her into trouble. But she's curious -- curious about the odd light in Hatsumomo's eyes, and the need for secrecy.

Korin and Hatsumomo just look at each other for a long, long moment. Then Hatsumomo smiles -- snake-like, Chiyo thinks, cunning and cruel.

"You are jealous."

"I am not," Korin says, almost sullen. "I have plenty of men of my own."

"You?" Hatsumomo sneers. Chiyo curls herself tighter into a ball, suddenly feeling very sorry for Korin. Not that she'd trade places with her for all the world: she knows Hatsumomo's sharp tongue far too well. "You are jealous."

Chiyo bites her lip hard as Hatsumomo moves forward quickly. She thinks that she might slap Korin, but instead she seizes her chin, making her look up.

"You're not jealous because you want him," she says, softly.

"No, no," Korin says, quickly, "I mean -- "

Hatsumomo's hand drops. She's smiling again. "I won't tell anyone. But you have to be very, very good. You have to keep my secrets for me... help me when I ask... make a fool of yourself if need be..."

Korin shakes her head. Chiyo curls tighter still. She doesn't really understand what's happening, but she does understand what Hatsumomo is doing. She stays as she is, frozen in place, watching through the crack as Hatsumomo turns away, going to her room. She watches as Korin, pale-faced, turns to leave, and wonders if the geisha could really be crying.
