DW: Things Change

Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Ten/Jack, Ten/Rose
Warnings: Angst
Rating: PG
Summary: Jack has changed a lot.

There are things there that weren't there, once upon a time. Wrinkles, born of laughter and pain. A note to the flirty smile that speaks of too many rejections and too many acceptances gone wrong. A glint in his eyes that was never there before, sadness and abandonment.

He's only ever thought of how travelling with him marks his companions. But now he notes that travelling without him hasn't been too kind to one of them, either. And of course, Jack died once. That's apt to leave its marks on a man.

"You've changed a lot," Jack says, and Ten is surprised, because even despite the changes, the obvious big change, Jack recognises him. "How long has it been for you? A day? A year? A few minutes?"

"A long time, friend," Ten says, and the word sits oddly on his tongue.

"You..." Jack is passive for a moment, and then something sparks in his eyes that Ten has seen before. He spends a moment trying to remember what it is, but then Jack takes it into his own hands to remind him. When the kiss breaks, Jack steps back a little, tilts his head. "What happened to Rose?"

"She stayed at home," Ten says, soft, with a tinge of regret.

"When did you see her last?" There was a hunger in Jack's voice. A hunger for the old familiarity. For the three they'd been, Jack, Rose and his past self. He doesn't want to be morbid, but he has to tell the truth.

"When she was on her deathbed," Ten says, and grief breaks through the smile he's worn since he first saw Jack there. He sees Jack's sudden effort, the movement of his throat as he swallows down a lump of tears.

"What...?"

Ten thinks about the brief visits to her. The kisses. The softness of her body under his, and her sweet smile when he pleased her. The way she would glare at him, though, when he spoke about the TARDIS, his travels. She didn't want to know. She'd been able to make do with brief visits, all out of order, somehow. So he'd had to make do, too. "Just old age."

"Well... we can find her again when she's younger, can't we?"

Ten doesn't normally go to find his companions again once he knows they've died while he was there. But he's broken that rule once already, with Jack.

"Okay."

Jack kisses him again, then, bittersweet and beautiful.
