It wasn't really her mother's strange behaviour that first had Garnet set her heart on flight. It was the feeling that she was a bird, battering her wings against the bars of her cage, forced to sing sweetly and be a joy to everyone and growing, with every year, more accustomed to being caged. She'd stand at her window and watch the birds flying away, and her heart would be with them, but her body could not follow.
She feared accepting such constraints. A princess, after all, should have what she wants -- otherwise, what good in being a princess?
